Texas Tornado D-Man Solorzano Makes Milestone Debut

Texas Tornado Defenseman Mico Solorzano Makes Milestone Debut

FRISCO – September 30, 2009 – Mico Solorzano of the Texas Tornado made a milestone jump last weekend when he suited up against the Topeka RoadRunners. Solorzano started the season off with the Texas Tornado U18 team of the NAPHL. His move to the Texas Tornado of the NAHL marks the first time a player has graduated from the league.

The North American Prospects Hockey League is a collection of Tier I Midget AAA teams created to serve as a developmental league for the NAHL. This is the NAPHL’s inaugural season, never having a player called to the NAHL until now. Solorzano’s exceptional play at the midget level has quickly earned him a spot at the junior level where he debuted last weekend in the Tornado home opener against the Topeka RoadRunners.

After just 5 games in the young NAPHL season the 17-year-old Solorzano had accumulated 7 points, good enough to be third in the league in points overall and first among defensemen. His 3 goals also led all NAPHL defensemen. His most memorable game in his short NAPHL career was a 2-1 win against the Green Bay Jr Gamblers in which Solorzano notched both goals for his team.

His scoring presence was felt early as a new member of the NAHL Tornado as he scored in Saturday’s game against Topeka, just his second game with the junior team.

Solorzano will wear number 23 for the Tornado.

Since their inception in 1999, the Texas Tornado has set the standard for excellence for junior hockey in the United States. Besides their three straight National Championships from 2004-2006 the Tornado has won seven NAHL Regular Season Division titles and had seven straight 40+ win seasons from 1999-2007. Their seventh straight division crown in 2007 tied a 30-year NAHL record, and their seven straight 40+ win seasons is an NAHL record. The Tornado have developed and moved on over 80 players in nine years onto NCAA and professional teams.

Dallas Cowboys at Denver Broncos | NFL Week 4

September 30, 2009 by Matt Lawrence · Leave a Comment

Tashard Choice - Dallas Cowboys RB

After last weeks win the Dallas Cowboys have 2 wins and 1 loss. The Cowboys rallied in the second half to beat the Panthers 21 – 7, and now face an undefeated Broncos team.

Denver Broncos
The Broncos have a new look this year thanks to the departure of head coach Mike Shanahan and Quarterback Jay Cutler. Josh McDaniels has taken over as the head coach of the Broncos, and his decisions have been questioned since it is believed that he is responsible for Jay Cutler’s departure. The Broncos wins have been over the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, and Oakland Raiders. The Raiders and Browns have a combined record of 1 – 5 and the Broncos did not dominate Cincinnati in their 12 – 7 win, so in other words the Broncos are a very weak 3 – 0 and have not been tested. The Broncos WRs Barandon Marshall and Eddie Royal will test the Cowboys secondary in this matchup.

Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys running back position is not looking as deep as it was at the beginning of the season due to Marion Barber and Felix Jones injuries. Felix is believed to be out for this game, and it is questionable whether Marion Barber will be available. Barber was a no show on the Cowboys Stadium sidelines for the Panthers game, the team is saying that he was getting treatment during the game. It is more likely that he was angry the Cowboys wouldn’t let him play, but you can decide for yourself. Running Back Tashard Choice was pressed into duty and did not disappoint, he ran for 82 yards and a TD and caught 4 balls for 36 more yards. Other roster news that came down this week is that Michael Jenkins is now the full time starting Corner Back for the Dallas Cowboys, he had been rotating with Orlando Scandrick who will now serve as the 3rd CB.

Texas Rangers Report – September 29 2009

September 30, 2009 by Guest Contributor · Leave a Comment

THE RANGERS REPORT – September 29

As the Texas Rangers’ sportsbook hopes to make the World Series die out, so does the Rangers Report for 2009. This week marks the final installment until next spring. Don’t worry; we’ll still keep tabs on the Rangers’ offseason in our Dallas Sports Roundup starting next week. For now, let’s catch up with Texas in detail one more time.

Current record: 85-71
AL West rank: 2
World Series odds: 5,000 to 1

THE LINEUP

Spending most of September without Josh Hamilton and Michael Young really hurt the Rangers and is perhaps the primary reason why they’re one loss or Red Sox win away from being mathematically eliminated from playoff contention. Josh Hamilton returned over the weekend to drive in five runs in two games but re-aggravated the pinched nerve in his back and is no sure bet to play again this season. Michael Young returned from a hamstring injury and gingerly banged out two hits on Monday night.

A bright spot: Marlon Byrd. He hit .320 with three homers and 11 RBI last week to earn AL Player of the Week Honors and quietly leads the Rangers with 89 RBI.

THE ROTATION

To say the wheels have fallen off for Tommy Hunter may be an understatement. The surprising rookie has struggled mightily over the last month and a half, seeing his ERA rise from 2.26 to 4.10 over his last 10 starts as teams face him for the second or third time. Thanks to solid run support, he’s 3-2 this month, but he has a 6.55 ERA during that span.

Fellow rookie and blue chipper Derek Holland continues to scuffle; he’s allowed 13 homers in his last 10 starts.

THE BULLPEN

As could be expected for any rookie, Neftali Feliz’s luster is wearing off late in the season. His velocity has dipped form 100 MPH to approximately 95, though pitching coach Mike Maddux doesn’t see any mechanical flaw or change that can explain the decline.

A week ago, we were discussing Frank Francisco’s job security in the closer role going forward. It seemed safe then but I’m betting management will have a tough time shaking Sunday’s four-run blown save out of its mind for the time being.

OVERALL OUTLOOK

The Rangers are almost in coast mode, as they would need to win out and see Boston lose out to make the playoffs. That means they’ll start looking to 2010 – and with great optimism. If Texas can add a veteran arm in the rotation and bullpen to spell the youngsters next season, it could seriously contend among other top MLB picks.

Big 12 Game of the Week | Oklahoma – Miami

September 29, 2009 by Matt Lawrence · Leave a Comment

Oklahoma Miami

The Oklahoma Sooners will meet the Miami Hurricanes at Landshark (Dolphins) Stadium in Miami on Saturday. The teams have played 6 times before, and the series is tied at 3 – 3 and the winner of Saturday’s game will hold the series lead.

The Oklahoma Sooners
The last game time these teams met the Sooners rolled to a 51 – 13 win over the Hurricanes. Sam Bradford had 5 touchdowns in the win and the Sooner defense held Miami to just 139 yards. Sam Bradford is still questionable to start the game because of a shoulder injury suffered in Oklahoma’s loss to BYU at Cowboys Stadium. Even if Bradford isn’t healthy enough to play on Saturday, OU’s QB Landry Jones is no slouch, he has improved quickly since stepping up to replace the injured Bradford. Landry Jones set a school record with his 6 touchdown passes against Tulsa. The previous record for OU quarterbacks was 5 touchdowns, which was shared by Sam Bradford, Jason White, and Josh Huepel.

The Miami Hurricanes
The Hurricanes got off to a fast start this season by beating 18th ranked Flordia State and 14th ranked Georgia Tech. The Canes were unable to continue their winning ways against 11th ranked Virginia Tech last week losing the game by a score of 31 – 7. The Hurricanes key offensive players are QB Jacoby Harris who won the ACC player of the week after both of Miami’s victories. Harris has posted over 800 yards and 6 touchdowns in 3 games this season. Other players to watch are RB Craig Cooper, WR Travis Benjamin, and LB Colin McCarthy. Mcarthy had 13 tackles in Miami’s loss to Virginia Tech.

Saving Big D: Cowboys Defense earns first Death Star win

September 29, 2009 by Cody Dunlap · Leave a Comment

Ahh. That feels so much better.

Jay Ratliff Dallas CowboysA slow start by the Dallas Cowboys in their Week 3 contest against the struggling Carolina Panthers had me worried, but whatever Wade did at halftime to the defense worked, and the offense did enough to pick up a 21-7 win.

Plenty of random thoughts (and a blogger’s confession!) after the jump:

Glad to see the defense finally show up. Make no mistake, that game was won by the defense. Did Jake Delhomme throw another crucial interception to kill the Carolina Panthers’ hopes? Yes. But the Dallas Cowboys defense shut down the Carolina Panthers’ running game too. Only 73 rushing yards for Carolina on 16 carries. Does that come out to a good average? Not really (4.6). But holding the other team to four straight three-and-outs to start a half? Hell and yes. Read more

COWBOY CORNER – WEEK 3 vs Panthers – Odds and Lines

September 24, 2009 by Guest Contributor · 1 Comment

The Cowboys’ NFL odds are up in the air a bit after Eli Manning’s heroics stole the first game at Cowboys Stadium in front of 100,000-plus fans. Tony Romo had “one of those games,” throwing three interceptions as Dallas fell to 1-1. This week, the pressure is on again in Monday Night Football, but the sports picks expert prognosis is much more positive for America’s Team against a mentally wounded Carolina squad.

Week 3 – CAROLINA PANTHERS @ DALLAS COWBOYS
Monday, September 28, 8:35 p.m. ET
Favorite: Cowboys -8.5

Cowboys offense vs Panthers defense

Whoever starts at halfback for the Cowboys will lick his chops right through to Monday’s kickoff. The Panthers’ run defense is porous, allowing 168 yards per game so far this season. Backs of all shapes and sizes – from Brian Westbrook to Michael Turner – have gashed Carolina. Even if Marion Barber can’t play, Tashard Choice excelled against elite run defenses late last season, so he’s more than ready to dominate. Same goes for Felix Jones, who has a good chance of hitting a home run Monday night.

Romo should also have a much easier time Monday, as the Panthers’ pass rush has been kitten-like, recording just two sacks in two games. Julius Peppers has drawn major criticism for his poor play. Romo should have time to spread the ball out to Jason Witten, Roy Williams and Patrick Crayton.

Big 12 Matchup of the Week – Houston vs Texas Tech

September 24, 2009 by Matt Lawrence · Leave a Comment

big12matchup
The Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Houston Cougars will square off this week in what promises to be a quarterback duel. Last week the Houston Cougars shocked the nation and Texas Tech suffered a tough 24 – 34 loss to rival and Big 12 opponent the Texas Longhorns. The Houston Cougars shocked the nation by knocking off #5 Oklahoma State last week by a score of 45 – 35. This win vaulted the Houston Cougars #17 in the AP top 25. Houston will need to win this week if they want to maintain their national ranking.

    THE RANGERS REPORT – September 22 2009

September 23, 2009 by Guest Contributor · Leave a Comment

NFL Week 3 matchups look more tempting every week for Dallas Sports fans, as the book is pretty much closed on the Texas Rangers’ season. Even though a playoff berth is highly unlikely now – the Rangers are seven games back of Boston – 2009 was a success for Texas, as some good young arms finally emerged to complement the big bats. Lets’ catch up with our boys.

    Current record: 82-67
    AL West rank: 2
World Series odds: 200 to 1

    THE LINEUP

It’s tough for Texas to stay in the playoff hunt when two of its key contributors are sitting out September. Josh Hamilton is on the verge of being shut down for the year with a pinched nerve in his back. After an MVP-caliber 2008, Hamilton looks like he’ll finish 2009 with a .270 average, 10 homers and 49 RBI in 326 at-bats. The numbers are disappointing but the Rangers hope he can carry his strong August, in which he hit .342, into next season.

Michael Young remains shelved and his career year is on hold. Overall, the Rangers can hang their hat on Nelson Cruz this season. The RBI total isn’t there but he’s shown legit big-league power with 32 homers so far this year.

    THE ROTATION

In his win Monday night – just his second since July 20 – Kevin Millwood surpassed the 180-inning mark for the year, triggering a vesting option in his contract that will give him $12 million next season. Thanks to the emergence of Scott Feldman and Tommy Hunter and the promise flashed by Derek Holland and Neftali Feliz, the Rangers may wish they hadn’t structured Millwood’s deal that way.

    THE BULLPEN

Like the Cowboys’ Week 3 NFL betting line now that Marion Barber is out, Neftali Feliz looks shaky of late. The flamethrowing rookie is finally allowing runs and may simply be tiring from his first Major-League work. Perhaps the Rangers will shut him down for the season.

Frank Francisco has a good shot to remain Texas’ closer next season. He’s saved 23 of 27 games, struck out 50 batters in 45.2 innings and held opponents to a .215 average. He’s a legit stopper.

    OVERALL OUTLOOK

The Rangers are inching toward “nothing left to play for” territory and I’m betting management may shut down several of their young arms as they prepare for the winter. Chins up, Rangers – better times lie ahead.
