Dallas Cowboys Report: Super Bowl this Year?

March 31, 2010 by Guest Contributor · Leave a Comment

The 2010 Final Four odds are in, but the fans of the Dallas Cowboys have other things on their minds. Even the best online sportsbook makers had a difficult time keeping the Cowboys out of the Super Bowl contender bracket. The Cowboys even got that December monkey off their backs in 2009 by only losing two games that month as opposed to the four or five they normally lose in December.

But a Dallas Cowboys report for the 2010 season must talk about the Super Bowl. The sports betting community believes that the Cowboys are already 10 to 1 favorites to win the Super Bowl this year, but odds on favorites are the Indianapolis Colts at 6 to 1. To win the Super Bowl the Cowboys need to win a playoff spot in the NFC while building a team that can beat Peyton Manning in February of 2011. The Cowboys may have done that.

The first move the Cowboys will make is to put Felix Jones in as the starting running back over Marion Barber. Why is this important? The New Orleans Saints are an NFC team unlike any other NFC team because they primarily throw the ball. Peyton Manning and the Colts also primarily throw the ball. Felix Jones is very good at pounding the ball for yards, and he also has break-away speed. The longer the Cowboys have the ball on offense, the less guys like Drew Brees and Peyton Manning have the ball.

Only in the land of the Cowboys can the job for place kicker be a primary concern. The Cowboys lost too many games last season due to bad field goal kicking, and now long kicker David Buehler is being given every chance to win both the kick-off and place kicking jobs from Connor Hughes. The Cowboys would prefer to not take up a roster spot for an extra kicker, but they are also not going to make the mistake of putting someone on the field that cannot win the game for them.

Staying with special teams, the Cowboys made sure that restricted free agent and kick return ace Sam Hurd will be on the team this season. Hurd will make an estimated $1.8 million for the season, and he will be a powerful weapon in getting the team field position.

The NBA betting in Dallas is centered around the playoff-bound Mavericks. But in Cowboys’ camp the central focus is that offensive line. This is the area of greatest weakness for the Cowboys right now, and it is also the area that the team has yet to address.

Rumors are beginning to fly about Flozell Adams being let go and someone being brought in from free agency or a trade. The Cowboys have a lot of depth on offense, but they are not likely to give up anything in a trade right now. Free agency offers almost nothing in the way of a good offensive lineman. That leaves the draft. The more the Cowboys wait to solve their offensive line problem, the more obvious it becomes that their first round draft pick will be a lineman that they believe will be a starter. Jerry Jones knows that his team is not winning a Super Bowl if Tony Romo cannot stay standing.

Dallas Round Up: Mavericks – Stars – Texas Rangers

March 26, 2010 by Guest Contributor · Leave a Comment

Dallas Round-Up – Mavs, Stars winding down, Rangers just getting started

When it comes to March Madness odds, Dallas doesn’t have anything to worry about, which means more time to check in on the Mavericks and Stars, as well as the Texas Rangers.

Dallas Mavericks

The Mavericks are 47-24 as of Thursday as they head to Portland in the evening, and they have won seven of their last 10 games. But there may be a couple of problems with the players they brought in from Washington, as Caron Butler has been incredibly inconsistent, while Brendan Haywood wasn’t happy about coming off the bench against the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night. The Mavericks went with Erick Dampier, and if they can get Haywood to be on board with the tandem setup, Dallas will have a lot of size in the post as they attempt to battle the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs, as well as the Denver Nuggets.

Dallas Stars

As of Thursday, the Stars were nine points out of the final playoff spot in the West, and it’s not looking likely that they’ll make the postseason. On Thursday, they head to San Jose, who are one of the sports betting favorites to lift the Stanley Cup, then on Saturday they’ll be in Los Angeles to face the Kings, one of the biggest surprises in the league. Finally, next Monday, they’ll travel to Anaheim to take on the Ducks, who are further out of the playoff hunt than Dallas, but they’re still a tough team to play again. The Stars will also be without Mike Modano, who had his appendix removed just under two weeks ago. But even if the Stars don’t make the playoffs, Brad Richards deserves a pat on the back for the season he’s had. Through 71 games, Richards has 21 goals and 61 assists for 82 points, and he has his sights set on his career high of 91 points, set in 2005-2006.

Texas Rangers

We’re betting management of the Rangers weren’t banking on finding out manager Ron Washington tested positive for cocaine, and that must be worrisome for a team that took a chance on Josh Hamilton’s checkered past. The Rangers are 6-13 so far in spring training, so it’s hard to say what kind of effect this has on the team as they’re basically just figuring out roster spots right now, but it’s about to get serious as the regular season approaches. Other than the manager, all eyes are on Hamilton and Vladdy Guerrero, who came from the rival Los Angeles Angels in the offseason. The Rangers will be trying to make up for the loss of Marlon Byrd, and these two are the anchors of the lineup. Finally, Rich Harden’s health has to be an issue for the Rangers. Thinking Harden will stay healthy is like picking Texas’ odds on March Madness: they look good and could be great, but we won’t be surprised if Harden ends up on the disabled list.

Texas Stadium: Death by Implosion

March 24, 2010 by Matt Lawrence · 2 Comments

When the construction of Cowboys Stadium started, we all new that it was only a matter of time before the demolition of Texas Stadium. The fate of Texas Stadium has been set, the Dallas Cowboys old home will be destroyed on April 11th. The implosion will be sponsored by Kraft Macaroni & Cheese oddly enough, because nothing says buy macaroni & cheese like an implosion. That aside lets take a look at the Texas Stadium history and honor the longtime home of the Dallas Cowboys.

Texas Stadium Statistics
Location: Irving, Texas
Opened: October 24th, 1971
Implosion: April 11th, 2010
Capacity: 65,675
Cost: 35 million (Cowboys Stadium: 1.15 billion)

Now that we have the boring statistics out of the way lets take a look at the odd facts that made Texas Stadium great. It was in Irving, which as the Dallas Cowboys names implies is close to Dallas. The iconic hole in the roof was not planned, Texas Stadium was actually supposed to be a dome. The hole came about because the roof supports could not handle the weight of a dome. The supports were not modified because back in the day when the public funding for a project ran out, you stopped spending. Cowboys linebacker D. D. Lewis is responsible for the famous quote, “Texas Stadium has a hole in tis roof so god can watch his favorite team play”.

As we have seen with the new Cowboys Stadium, Texas Stadium also played host to plenty events that were not Dallas Cowboys Games. Events such as Concerts, Pro Wrestling, College Football, Religious Gatherings, High School Football, and even a Major League Lacrosse game.

Texas Stadium was the place that I became a fan of football, and it will suck to see it go. I know the stadium is not as high tech or cool as the new Cowboys Stadium, but you could still watch the Cowboys play there and I was lucky enough to see quite a few games there. Texas stadium didn’t do big video boards or 3-D glasses, it did football.

2010 NFL Draft: Cowboys Draft Pick Needs

March 24, 2010 by Guest Contributor · Leave a Comment

Dallas Cowboys Draft 2010Cowboys Offseason

Sportsbook Super Bowl Odds (for XLV): Cowboys +1215

NFC Odds (5Dimes Reviews): Cowboys +685

Who are the Cowboys looking at in the Draft?

This is a busy time of year as the March madness odds rolls on, and the concerns about the NFL draft begin to pile up. There has always been a gap between what the teams are looking at in the draft and what fans feel their team needs to win. But just like March madness odds can sometimes miss the mark on predicting a winner, the fans do not always get what they want in the NFL draft.

The Cowboys consider their place kicking problem more than just a minor inconvenience. Last season their kickers cost them games and cost them the playoffs. While Jerry Jones has never been excited about kickers, he certainly does not want a kicker derailing the 2010 season. The Cowboys could conceivably use their third or fourth round pick on a kicker to give David Buehler a reason to excel in training camp. Considering the Cowboys do not have any extra picks in the 2010 draft, choosing a kicker in the third or fourth round could be a very big deal. Read more

Sweet 16: Baylor Bears vs St Marys

March 22, 2010 by Matt Lawrence · 2 Comments

The Baylor Bears will face St. Mary’s Gaels on Friday night, the Bears have looked strong in both of their wins in the 2010 NCAA tournament. Baylor beat Sam Houston State, in the first round of March madness, and Old Dominion in the second round. The Baylor Bears rely on their speedy back court duo: Tweety Carter and LaceDarius Dunn to control the game, and star center Ekpe Udoh to clean things up.

The St. Mary’s Gaels have pulled a couple of upsets to get to this point, they have faced two favorable match ups in their wins over Richmond & Villanova. On Friday we will see how complete St. Mary’s is when they have to face a talented big man like Baylor’s Ekpe Udoh. Richmond and Nova both had talented guards, but they were unable to match up against Omar Samhan’s size.

The matchup between the Baylor Bear’s Ekpe Udoh and St. Mary’s Gaels Omar Samhan will be great, for a look at the rest of the games in the sweet 16 check out the Sweet 16 guide over at MSF.

Live From Surprise!

March 21, 2010 by Cody Dunlap · Leave a Comment

We’ve got about two weeks until Opening Day here at Dallas Sports Fans, so I thought a report from Surprise Recreation Campus would whet your appetite a little bit for some Rangers Baseball! Don’t worry about that whole Ron Washington story out here – the weather’s too nice.

Out here in Surprise at Texas Rangers Spring Training, the biggest worry is who’s going to fill out the rotation (a usually impossible task for the local franchise). Rich Harden, Scott Feldman and Colby Lewis look to have spots filled up right now, with Tommy Hunter being penciled in for the fourth position up until yesterday (or what seemed like yesterday).

Two spots are open, with Derek Holland, Brandon McCarthy, C.J. Wilson and Matt Harrison gunning for the last two spots.

Well, after today, it’s down to three candidates.

I want Derek Holland to do well. I think he has the stuff to be an anchor for the Texas Rangers’ rotation in the future. But he is not ready right now. If this team is really going to compete for an AL West title like we all hope they will, Derek Holland is not currently one of the starters that will get them there.

He pitched four innings today against the Dodgers, surrendering three runs on four hits and one walk. All the runs were scored in one inning, with the big blow being a double coming off the bat of Lucas May and going over David Murphy’s head.

There were a bevy of ground balls, but there were no strikeouts, as the Rangers fell 5-4. He was constantly behind the hitters and failed to put any of them away. Still, he doesn’t even turn 24 until October, so there’s no need to panic. Let Derek work on his secondary stuff in Oklahoma City and let him be in a rotation every fifth day.

I certainly don’t want to incite any nervousness in the Texas Rangers fan base, but there are small doubts that are creeping into my mind about this crop of talent the Texas Rangers have turned into one of the best farm systems in the big leagues.

Derek Holland didn’t quite take the leap some were expecting. Justin Smoak was hurt by an oblique injury early on, and didn’t exactly have gaudy power numbers. Feliz had the most electrifying debut, but the debate over whether his future is as a starter or a reliever is just as strong as ever. Of course there are other prospects, but it’s hard to argue that these three are the most vital to the short and long term success of the franchise.

Are these doubts completely irrational? Absolutely. It’s far too early to make any kind of lasting judgment on what these youngsters will become. Derek Holland has thrown 61 minor league innings above A-ball. Not exactly the most experienced starter in the organization. Neftali Feliz and Justin Smoak are 21 and 23 years old, respectively. There’s still SO much time for these guys to develop. It’s silly to have doubts, but I suppose I’m just a disillusioned Rangers fan.

Back to the positives, because hope springs eternal.

David Murphy had a very nice game, knocking a homer and a triple in his first two at-bats. His center field play was not spectacular, but hopefully there won’t be a huge need for him to play center field this year.

Colby Lewis looked great after a shaky first inning when he allowed three baserunners and one run. He struck out six in five innings, was around the plate all day (one walk), and was changing speeds pretty effectively, getting a couple of nice swinging strikeouts.

Taylor Teagarden had a nice opposite field double off the wall that almost left the yard, but looked overmatched in his second at-bat.

Only one-third of the *hopeful* Opening Day lineup was there today, with Hamilton, Cruz and Davis all taking their hacks. Matt Brown had another home run, but his fielding has been a bit of a problem (which is like saying a plague of locusts is a bit of a nuisance), so his destination looks like AAA or another organization.

As for that whole rotation question, I think that the Texas Rangers have a tough call to make, especially with Tommy Hunter hurting his rib cage and likely heading for the disabled list. The two leaders for the last two spots are Matt Harrison and C.J. Wilson, and I have no problem with those two guys as the last two starters for the Rangers.

The problem is that Tommy Hunter (knock on wood) will not be hurt for a long period of time. The last starter only needs to be a guy that can fill in and head back to the bullpen when Hunter is healthy again. That’s a role I don’t particularly want to see C.J. Wilson in, for the simple reason of clarity.

C.J. Wilson, not unlike Derek Holland, should have a defined role on the team. Whether that’s in the bullpen or the rotation remains to be seen, but I think it would be cruel to give C.J. Wilson a fair shot to start in spring training, have him win a job, and then send him back to the bullpen after two to three starts. Especially if those turn out to be two or three solid starts.

The Texas Rangers have some tough decisions to make. Wilson heads to the mound again Monday against the Giants – things should be a little clearer after that. I’ll have one more report tomorrow after the game against the San Diego Padres.

Until then, the countdown sits at 15 days.
