Dallas Cowboys Update: Tony Romo Becoming a Polarizing Figure for Cowboys

October 4, 2011 by · 1 Comment

When you are the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback, the online betting sports fans pay a lot of attention to you. That is especially true when you are losing. Tony Romo has lost eight of his last 12 NFL starts, he only has one playoff win in his career and his style of play is being singled out by many people as the primary reason why the Cowboys are struggling.

For all of the price per head activity that surrounds Romo, he remains a polarizing figure among Cowboys’ players, fans, management and others in the Dallas sports world. Dallas Mavericks’ star player and NBA finals MVP Dirk Nowtizki has made statements in support of Romo. Dallas Cowboys’ head coach Jason Garrett has indicated that Romo is not to take all of the blame for the team’s failings as of late.

But former Dallas Cowboys’ cornerback, and recent NFL Hall of Fame inductee, Deion Sanders has said that Romo is not an elite quarterback and not the one that will lead Dallas to the Super Bowl. Sanders says that Romo shows the fortitude to be a winner, but lacks the decision-making abilities of a true champion.

The price per head bookmaking services may hear a little less out of Dallas defensive coordinator this week after his comments last week may have worked to inspire the Detroit Lions. Dallas defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, along with his brother Rex Ryan (Jets head coach), is never at a loss for confidence. Prior to the Detroit game, Rob Ryan said that his defense practices against receivers that are better than Detroit’s Calvin Johnson. Ryan went so far as to say that Johnson would be a third-string receiver on the Cowboys at best.

By the time the week four game against the Lions was over, the Cowboys’ defense had collapsed and Calvin Johnson had caught two critical touchdowns. Ryan’s insistence that Johnson only needed to be in single coverage for the entire game could be one of the things that cost Dallas the game. We may hear boasts from Ryan in the future, but he may avoid mentioning individual names from now on.

The top NFL pick for the Cowboys two years ago, wide receiver Dez Bryant, is having problems finishing games because he is unable to practice. Bryant has a deep thigh bruise that makes it painful for him to run for extended periods of time. By the time that the fourth quarter comes around, Bryant can barely move. NFL fans in Dallas have been impressed to this point because Bryant has played well in the three games he has been in. But the pain and lack of conditioning is starting to catch up with him.

Head coach Jason Garrett mentioned that the trainers are doing everything they can for Bryant, but the big wide receiver may experience conditioning issues until that deep thigh bruise is gone. Bryant caught two touchdown passes in the week four loss to Detroit, but he has been unable to run the deep routes that he is expected to run since the season opened.

Dallas Cowboys Update: Cowboys Team Coming Together after Big Win

October 4, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The sports betting world was not sure what to make of the Dallas Cowboys coming into the 2011-2012 season. The Cowboys just came off of an off-season full of controversy, distractions and a lock out. But something looked like it was clicking with the Cowboys when they took the field for week one. Even though the first game of the season was a loss to the New York Jets on national television, the Cowboys showed a new determination that had to have been born out of the new coaching staff. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan and head coach Jason Garrett have been nothing but positive the entire off-season, and now it looks like it is wearing off on the team.

You don’t have to go fishing very far for examples of how Tony Romo is developing as a player, teammate and leader. With a fractured rib and punctured lung, Romo went out and lead the Cowboys to a 2-1 record by beating the previously undefeated Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football. When his center was having problems snapping in the shot gun, Romo took his center aside and calmed him down. When the Redskins did an all out blitz late in the game to try and neutralize Romo, the calm quarterback threw a key pass to wide receiver Dez Bryant that set up the game winning field goal. Romo’s toughness and leadership skills took a huge leap forward in a very important win for Dallas.

The NFL betting lines may not have counted on a Dallas win by field goals only in week three, but the Cowboys will take the win any way they can get it. The six field goals in a game is a Dallas Cowboys’ team rookie record for rookie kicker Dan Bailey. The win helped the team to gain confidence in Bailey as well as quarterback Tony Romo.

Another Dallas Cowboy who was playing to spite incredible pain was running back Felix Jones. Jones was hurt in week two against the San Francisco 49ers when he dislocated his shoulder. But NFL fans got to see a new side to Felix Jones when he went out and put up 115 rushing yards against an aggressive Washington Redskins defense. What made Jones’ performance even more noteworthy is that most of the yards were put up in the second half of the game. After 30 minutes of getting hit on a bad shoulder, Jones was able to go out and pick his game up even further in the second half to help the Cowboys grab the win.

The Dallas Cowboys’ defense stepped up in the team’s Monday night win as well. Dallas’ defense has been taking a verbal and physical beating for almost two seasons now, and it looked like that would continue as the Redskins’ offense pummeled the Cowboys’ defense in the first half. But in the second half the Cowboys pushed back, and the end result was a Dallas win. The new and gritty attitude of the Cowboys makes the week four game against the Detroit Lions one of the more difficult NFL picks of the week.

Dallas Cowboys Update: Cowboys Even Record at 1-1 but Pay a Price

September 20, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The San Francisco 49ers is already looking much better at the start of this season than they did at any point last year. But a disappointing overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys in week two put San Francisco back to 1-1. For the Cowboys, week two was a chance to get the sports betting world back on Dallas’ side and bring its record up to 1-1. By the time the game was over, the Cowboys had brought its record up to 1-1 but had paid a very high price in the process.

In week three, the NFL betting lines will be tough to call as the Cowboys host the high-flying Washington Redskins on Monday Night Football. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, the events of week two may make the sportsbook promo odds-makers jobs a bit easier. The Cowboys suffered some major injuries on offense and, coupled with lingering injuries from training camp, those injuries could put the Cowboys at a distinct disadvantage.

Wide receiver Miles Austin had to leave the game with a hamstring strain in week two. Wide receiver Dez Bryant has a thigh injury he sustained in week one that still has him out of action. Running back Felix Jones has a separated shoulder but is trying to play through the pain and starting center Phil Costa was injured in the week two win over San Francisco and did not finish the game. It is not known if any of these players will be ready for week three against the Washington Redskins or, if they do play, how effective they will be. This makes the NFL pick this week in the Dallas game interesting.

But perhaps the most significant offensive injury of the day was the cracked rib and punctured lung suffered by quarterback Tony Romo. This was a game where Romo was starting to show significant improvement over his embarrassing performance of last week. Romo finished the game, but was in obvious pain as he walked off the field. Romo’s status for week three is also unknown.

No one was really fishing for blame on the Cowboys’ rash of injuries, but head coach Jason Garrett stepped up and took the heat for at least one of the injuries. Miles Austin was already hobbled with his bad hamstring when Garrett called a running play to Austin late in the game. Rather than bringing the wide receiver out of the game and getting him medical attention, Garrett feels that the play he called may have made things worse for the Cowboys’ number one receiver. Now the Cowboys face the prospects of facing the Washington Redskins without the Dallas starting quarterback, running back, both wide receivers and the center.

In some positive Dallas Cowboys’ injury news, cornerback Terence Newman says that he will be able to play in week three against the Redskins. Newman has been out since August 3rd when he suffered a pulled groin muscle. Newman Twittered that his recovery is complete and he is ready to join the team for this important divisional game.

Dallas Cowboys Update: Three New Additions to the Cowboys’ Ring on Honor

August 23, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The Dallas Cowboys have always been proud of its tradition and have revered the players that have helped to establish the Cowboys’ winning tradition. Sports betting Dallas Cowboys’ fans will be honoring three men who are part of that tradition when Drew Pearson, Charles Haley and Larry Allen are added to the Dallas Ring of Honor in Cowboys Stadium.

The last time that three players were inducted together into the Ring of Honor was in 2005 when Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin were inducted together. While Pearson, Haley and Allen don’t have quite the connection that the “Triplets” did, they are still remembered by football betting online Cowboys’ fans as three key players in maintaining the Dallas dominance of the NFL from the mid-1970’s through to the 1990’s.

The Cowboys are starting to get healthy again at running back as Tashard Choice is getting closer to being able to play again and rookie DeMarco Murray has been cleared to play by the Dallas medical staff. Murray was sidelined early in training camp with a pulled hamstring that has now healed enough where he can start taking snaps at practice. Murray joins an uncertain backfield that consists of the previously mentioned Choice and stalwart Felix Jones. NFL analysts know what Jones can do, but Choice is an unproven player and Murray’s rookie status makes him a question mark in the offensive backfield.

After the Cowboys lost their second preseason game to the San Diego Chargers 20-7, head coach Jason Garrett pointed out two areas where the Cowboys need to improve if it wants to win in 2011. The first is in the turnover department. Three times the Cowboys had a drive stalled in the San Diego end of the field with a turnover. But the Cowboys could not get a turnover in return. The head coach points to a lack of discipline and an inability to protect the ball as the reasons for the turnovers.

The other area that Garrett is concerned about is the play of starting quarterback Tony Romo. Even though Romo was part of lockout workouts and has been throwing to his receivers for a couple of months now, he did not look sharp and wound up throwing an interception as one of the Cowboys turnovers. Garrett vows to address the issues and get his team ready for the start of the regular season.

It could be because they have a lack of other choices, but the Cowboys coaching staff is high on one of their NFL picks at cornerback and that is Orlando Scandrick. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has predicted that Scandrick will have a big year this year and show the rest of the league what he is capable of. The Cowboys lost out on signing prized free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha in the off-season, and now they are trying to piece together a defensive secondary that can win games and give the Cowboys a chance to make the playoffs.

Dallas Sports Fan – An In-Depth Look At The Cowboys’ Preseason Opener

August 18, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Even MLB baseball betting players have to understand that in Dallas, the Cowboys rule the headlines, even though Texas was in the World Series last year and the Mavericks just won the NBA title. The Cowboys have just one playoff win since 1996, but they’re still the stars of the city and they opened their preseason slate last Thursday at home against Denver, coming away with a last-minute victory.

Dallas Cowboys

It was just good to see Tony Romo back on the field after he missed most of last year with a broken clavicle, and he went 3-of-5 for 33 yards in a 24-23 victory. You knew that Romo wasn’t going to play a lot, especially in the first game, but it was still comforting for coach Jason Garrett to see him executing the offense. Stephen McGee had a huge game, going 14-of-24 for 208 yards, three touchdowns and a pick and he also added 25 yards on four carries, showing NFL betting players that Jon Kitna may have a little competition for the backup role. The Cowboys got some production from Philip Tanner on the ground as Tashard Choice and rookie DeMarco Murray were injured, although they should be ready to go for Sunday’s contest against San Diego, also at home.

Defensively, the Cowboys allowed the Broncos to throw for 238 yards and a score, which shows that they still have a lot of work to do in the secondary, an area that was torched last season. The Broncos also ran for 119 yards, but we should get a clearer picture of how the Cowboys stack up this week as the starters didn’t get much time. The secondary also received some bad news as cornerback Terence Newman has a groin issue and it’s up in the air whether he’ll be in the lineup for the regular-season opener, so keep an eye on that situation.

Those making NFL betting picks shouldn’t take too much from this game, which is basically a glorified scrimmage, but it was good to see McGee getting some reps and leading a drive that resulted in a score with 15 seconds left to win the game. He needs as much confidence as possible because let’s face it, Kitna isn’t going to be around forever (although we keep saying that). The Chargers will be a better test for the Cowboys as the Broncos don’t have a great defense, and San Diego’s unit was ranked first in the league last season. Still, it was a solid performance for the Cowboys to get their season off on a positive note, and they didn’t harm their online sports betting odds with their effort.

Dallas Cowboys Update: The Dez Bryant Scandal Rages On

June 7, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The sports betting world was disappointed when news of Dez Bryant’s financial indiscretions started to come out. Bryant owes hundreds of thousands of dollars to jewelers all over the country. As the 2011 Belmont betting approaches, Bryant announced over the weekend that he has taken care of all of his financial obligations. Obviously the troubled wide receiver wants to dim the media spotlight that is shining on him so he can get back to working out with his team.

But, while Bryant tries to convince the rest of the world that he is financially clean, word comes from the attorney for Colleyville Jewelers that Dez Bryant still owes $600,000 for jewelry, game tickets and personal loans. Bryant had promised to pay Colleyville back when he was signed to an NFL contract. When that did not happen, Colleyville sued.

Dez Bryant says that he will settle this suit when he gets his $1 million roster bonus when the lockout is over. This indicates that Bryant has already spent all of the money he made from his signing bonus and first year’s pay. Dez Bryant is not claiming to be broke, but he hasn’t been on any extended shopping sprees lately.

Bryant’s story begs some interesting questions. Should the NFL be forced to wait until players are drafted before schooling players on how to deal with fame and fortune? It is a slippery slope because of the desire to keep amateur players away from contact with the pros. But if the NCAA is not going to allow the NFL to alert players to the lure of money, then what is the NCAA doing to help these players? How can a college football player run up a tab of $600,000 without the NCAA knowing and without there being an NCAA investigation into it now that it has come to light?

As the NFL veterans and NFL picks get together for player-sponsored workouts, the NFL coaches are caught in a difficult situation. Apparently a brief was filed, supposedly on behalf of the NFL coaches, that supports the player’s stance in lifting the lockout. Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett immediately drafted a letter to Jerry Jones, on behalf of the entire Cowboys’ coaching staff, which said that the Cowboys coaches did not ask to be part of that brief.

NFL coaches work for the owners but need to keep authority over the players. It is a difficult line to walk, especially during a labor dispute. What makes things worse for the Cowboys coaches is that many of them were hired this year and have not had extended contact with the players yet. But the players understand the difficult situation the coaches are in, and they know why Garrett sent the letter to Jerry Jones.

People often forget the difficult position coaches are put in during a labor dispute. Coaches never get involved in negotiations and they are rarely seen giving quotes to the media about the lockout. All Garrett can do is try to keep the peace until a new CBA is in place.

Dallas Cowboys Update: Tony Romo Keeping Busy This Off-Season

May 10, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The sports betting world knows that the quarterback is looked at as the leader of any football team. As the 2011 Preakness betting starts to heat up, questions about Tony Romo’s leadership skills are coming up again. While the Preakness betting moves along, Tony Romo is out trying to qualify for the US Open golf tournament. Romo started to organize workouts for his players during the lockout, and then took some time off to play golf.

Romo has done this before, and he has come under fire for it. Romo is known for going off on Las Vegas vacations during critical points in the season, and missing off-season workouts to play golf. It does not look like the quarterback intends to change his ways. Romo did not score low enough in the qualifier to make the tournament, so he was forced to return to the workouts he organized with his teammates.

Once Romo put his mind back to working out with the team, he opened up the off-season workouts to the 2011 NFL picks in this year’s draft. All of the Cowboys rookies were invited to join the veterans in an undisclosed location for off-season workouts that are being paid for primarily by Tony Romo. So far, it is unknown if any of the rookies are going to take the veterans up on the offer. Romo said he is hoping to have 50 Dallas players working out together by the end of the week.

Dallas players that have been working out together say that there is definitely a training camp atmosphere among the players. The players are working hard to get into shape for what they hope is the upcoming 2011 season, and there is even competition arising in various positions. The running backs and linebackers have been trying to one-up each other throughout the workouts, and the players say that the competition is healthy for the team and a very good thing.

The Cowboys did an excellent job of addressing their needs on the offensive line in the draft. But there is still a glaring need in the defensive secondary that the Dallas brass just does not want to talk about. One option could be former Oakland Raiders cornerback. Nnamdi Asomugha. In January, the Raiders voided the contract of Asomugha and made him a free agent. Several teams were completely shocked, and very interested in the stand-out cornerback’s services. One of those teams is Dallas division rival Philadelphia Eagles. It will be a race, once free agency opens up after the signing of the new collective bargaining agreement, to see who gets Asomugha’s signature to a contract first.

Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett announced recently that he thinks that troubled wide receiver Dez Bryant is making amends for past mistakes and will be a contributing member of the team when camp finally opens. Despite Bryant’s many lawsuits and his reluctance to come to the Valley Ranch facility to meet with owner Jerry Jones when the lockout was temporarily lifted, Garrett feels that his wide receiver will be ready to go when the season begins. Garrett gave no indication as to whether or not he has spoken recently to Bryant, but he said he has been keeping track of Bryant and has confidence in him.

Dallas Cowboys Update: New Cowboys Fit the Garrett Way of Doing Things

May 3, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

New Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett told the sports betting world that he wants all of his players to work hard and have the strongest character. In the draft class of 2011, four of the eight Dallas Cowboys’ picks were team captains and all are known for their strong desire to play the game of football. As the 2011 Kentucky Derby betting gets closer, the new Cowboys were introduced to the media at Valley Ranch. All of them said the right things and expressed their joy at being part of the Cowboys organization.

When the draft was over, a sportsbook promo quote from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones indicated that the Cowboys had several chances to trade the ninth overall pick. But Jones decided to take offensive tackle Tyron Smith instead. The Cowboys were asked why they did not go for a defensive player in the first round and head coach Jason Garrett indicated that the failings of the Dallas defense in 2010 was not due to the players. Garrett insisted that the coaching and the scheme put the defense in bad situations. The Cowboys believe they have the players to win on defense, and Garrett is looking to new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to get the most from the players.

It is like a price per head bad movie that just keeps on playing over and over again. Last season, Dallas quarterback Tony Romo missed workout time with his teammates so that he could pursue his passion for golf, which cause a lot of controversy at Valley Ranch. Fans and the media were not impressed with a quarterback that seemed to want to be on the links more than he was working with his teammates. Romo obviously ignored the criticism last year because he has announced that he will try to qualify for the US Open this year. It is still not clear how Romo intends to compete in the tournament if he qualifies when it takes place starting June 13, 2011. If the lockout is ended soon, then that will be when OTAs will start.

The Philadelphia Eagles drafted kicker Alex Henery in the 2011 draft, and that could mean the end of the David Akers era with the Eagles. However, one team’s loss is another team’s gain as the Cowboys have expressed a strong interest in picking up the veteran kicker. The Cowboys have had a string of kickers the past two years that have yet to live up to the team’s expectations. Akers would be a welcome addition to a team looking for some stability on the field and in the locker room.

The issues with last year’s first round pick, wide receiver Dez Bryant, continue to mount for the Cowboys. When the courts lifted the lockout last week, Jerry Jones made a meeting with Bryant to discuss Bryant’s off the field issues. The meeting was set for Friday of that week, and Bryant did not show up. Jones claims that his own schedule became too busy to meet with Bryant and that Bryant is not to blame. But others at Valley Ranch are saying that Jones was at the facility and waiting for Bryant who never showed up.

It is unclear as to what the future holds for Bryant. The Cowboys did not take any wide receivers in the 2011 draft, but it remains to be seen if this snub of Jerry Jones will be allowed to stand.

Dallas Cowboys Update – Cowboys Draft Choice Becoming Clearer

April 26, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

The sports betting world is getting more convinced that they know who the Cowboys will choose with the ninth overall pick in the NFL draft. As the online betting for Kentucky Derby favorites continues, Jerry Jones and other top brass in Valley Ranch are hinting towards choosing a much-needed offensive lineman in the first round.

The sportsbook promo experts are speculating that what the Cowboys need is a tackle and not a guard. While Florida’s Mike Pouncey is a talented lineman, and has an impressive pedigree with his brother Maurkice playing center for the Pittsburgh Steelers, he is also a guard. The pay per head experts all agree that, considering how well offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo has performed in workouts since the combine, that Castonzo could be the pick that the Cowboys make. Cowboys quarterbacks were hammered by rushes from the outside, and the running game was not able to get going like it wanted to. A quality tackle like Castonzo could be the last piece in the offensive puzzle for the Cowboys.

The courts ruled that the owners must lift the lock out and allow players access to the teams’ facilities. The lockout was lifted on Tuesday, but it did little to temper the anger between the two sides. Throughout the NFL, small groups of players were seen reporting for practice Tuesday morning. The players were told that they could enter the facility, but they would not be allowed to work out.

The Dallas Cowboys players are maintaining their confidential schedule of private workouts until the new collective bargaining agreement has been signed. It is unknown if any Cowboys tried to enter the Valley Ranch facility, but it is known that the player-sponsored workouts continue in anticipation of the start of the 2011 season.

In a tradition that started a few years ago, former players will announce the second-round draft picks of their former teams. Commissioner Roger Goodell will announce the first round picks, as the commissioner has done since the days of Pete Rozelle. The Cowboys will send former defensive stand-out Charles Haley to the podium to announce their second-round pick. The Cowboys have the 40th pick in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft.

When Cowboys backup tight end Martellus Bennett announced that he would like to see a quarterback competition between Tony Romo and Jon Kitna, it raised a few eyebrows among Cowboys fans. However, the idea is not being met with much enthusiasm from the Dallas players and front office. Team vice president Stephen Jones made it very clear that Tony Romo is the starter, and that the team will start developing young quarterbacks like Stephen McGee behind Romo to someday take Romo’s place. But, for now, Romo is the starter and he will not have to compete to keep his job.

The Dallas Cowboys received the honor of playing the New York Jets, in New York, to open the season on September 11, 2011. The day would mark the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the Cowboys take great pride in being a part of that weekend. But the recent labor dispute could force the league to forgo games for that weekend and cause the Cowboys to miss their chance to be part of history. Either way, head coach Jason Garrett says that the team is honored to just be considered for the opportunity.

Dallas Cowboys Update: New Head Coach is Frustrated by Lockout

March 23, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Sports betting enthusiasts are forced to sit by and wait as the NFL and the NFL players try to work out a new collective bargaining agreement. While there is still plenty of March Madness betting to occupy sports fans’ time, the NFL players and coaches are not allowed to have contact during the lockout. As the sportsbook promo experts know, coaches use the off-season to implement new offensive and defensive schemes as well as work out possible free agents. But it is especially hard on new head coaches, as new Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is finding out.

Garrett is not just the Cowboys new head coach, the Dallas job is his first NFL head coaching job ever. That makes Garrett extremely frustrated with the lockout, and he is starting to publicly voice his frustrations. In a recent 5dimes review of the Cowboys’ off-season progress with reporters, Garrett expressed frustration at the inability to start implementing his new plans and programs with his players. The Cowboys have new offensive and defensive coordinators who are also missing out on valuable time with the players. For a new coaching staff trying to implement a new system before the season begins, this lockout is one of the worst things that could have happened.

While the current players are being locked out by the owners, the future of the NFL is ready to go on display in the 2011 NFL draft. Last year, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones ignored most of his team’s critical needs and drafted wide receiver Dez Bryant. By the time the season was over, the needs that were not addressed wound up causing the Cowboys to succumb to a 6-10 record.

In a press conference held early last week, Jones said that he plans on discussing team needs with new head coach Jason Garrett before the draft. However, Jones once again emphasized the work that the scouts have done as playing a role in draft pick decisions. Jones praised his scouts for the hard work that they have done throughout the year, and he intends to listen to their recommendations when the Cowboys are ready to pick ninth overall in the draft.

That should send another cold shiver up the spine of Cowboys fans as some of the highest rated players in the draft are quarterbacks and defensive linemen. While the Cowboys could use help in the pass rush and run stop, where Dallas really needs help is at safety and on the offensive line. Free agency looks to be a mystery this year with the CBA still up in the air. There are several very talented safeties and offensive linemen available in this year’s draft. It will be interesting to see who the Cowboys take in the early rounds and if Dallas will address its issues, or draft what is considered to be the best player available regardless of position.

There has also been a great deal of activity at Valley Ranch involving quarterbacks as well. It could be that Jerry Jones is looking for a more reliable backup to Tony Romo. But considering that Jon Kitna did an excellent job filling in for Romo when Romo was hurt last season, it could be time for Romo to start thinking about the other teams in the NFL he could be starting for.
