What the Mavs could do next

July 10, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Yesterday’s news that the Mavs were getting Shawn Marion energized a lot of Mavs fans, including myself. While this trade doesn’t necessarily push the Mavs over the top, I definitely think it makes them better. But, the Mavs are far from a finished product, and Cubes and Donnie could have another couple of ideas about what they want to do to improve the team.

There are still a couple of big trade pieces the Mavs could use as part of a package to improve their team once again.

What the Mavs need the most right now is a shooting guard. As presently constructed, Jason Terry is the best on the roster, but he was also the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year, so the Mavs needs to find a shooting guard worthy of starting. If they pull off a trade like this, that shooting guard which they would trade for could be used as part of a smaller crunch-time lineup.

Does Dallas really need to do anything? I think they do, but their roster as presently constructed is definitely an upgrade over last year’s. With a starting five (probably) looking like Kidd-Howard-Marion-Dirk-Gortat, and a bench with Terry, Dampier, Humphries, Barea and Ross, the Mavs probably are near the top of the Western Conference contenders. Still, to get themselves on the same level as the Lakers, I think they need to make another move.

There are a few different shooting guards I think the Mavs can pursue (I have no info to suggest that they have already), including Detroit’s Richard Hamilton, Phoenix’s Jason Richardson and Milwaukee’s Michael Redd.

Redd comes with a hefty contract, though, as the soon-to-be 30 year old guard is due to make more than $16 million next season.
Richardson is slated to make a little more than $13 million, and Hamilton is due to make a little more than $11 million.

In order to make a trade like this work, the Mavericks would probably have to give up Josh Howard, whose contract expires after this coming season but holds a team option for 2010-11. Erick Dampier will be entering the sixth year of a seven-year contract in 2009-10, so he won’t be going anywhere.

It’s still possible that the Mavericks could be able to make a trade, but judging by their salary situation (loaded with contracts already), its unlikely that the Mavs will be able to take on too much more money. So while I don’t think the Mavs are going to make another deal, I’m not ready to count them out of the trade market either.

A nice day in Dallas sports

July 9, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

A couple of relatively big events in Dallas sports yesterday. A big series win against the Angels for the first place Texas Rangers and a major (read: complicated) trade for the Dallas Mavericks. So let’s break them down, starting with the Mavs.

Dallas Mavericks trade for Shawn Marion shawn-marion-hands-up

There are a lot of complicated parts to the trade the Mavericks made yesterday, but the most important fact for Mavs fans is that Shawn Marion will be in Big D next season. Devean George and Antoine Walker are headed to Toronto, Jerry Stackhouse is headed to Memphis and Kris Humphries and Greg Buckner are reportedly coming here. Buckner is supposedly going to be released, though, although it seems Humphries will stay.

Some quick stats:

Marion – 12.9 PPG (14.3 with Toronto), 8.5 RPG, 35.8 MPG, 1.28 SPG

Humphries – 3.9 PPG, 2.4 RPG, 9.1 MPG

Marion always did give Dirk problems whenever the Mavs and Suns matched up in the playoffs, so I think he can still be a comptent defender along with a good rebounder and decent scorer. Don’t look for him to shoot 3′s though – only 18.9% last year. Still, Marion is a very nice player that definitely made the Mavericks a better team.

Humphries isn’t going to add a ton to this team, although he could fill some of the void left by Brandon Bass (as it looks more and more that Bass is not going to be back). He appeared in only 29 games last year, so don’t expect to see a ton of Humphries.

Is this a spectacular trade for the Mavericks? Probably not. But is it a horrible trade? Absolutely not. This trade does Mavericks better than they were before, as Stackhouse was too beset by injuries to be of much use. Somehow, though, I don’t think the Mavs are done. I think Mark Cuban and Donnie Nelson might have something else in mind in order to make the core of this team younger. We shall see.

Rangers reclaim first place; take two of three from Angels andruw-jones

On the West Coast last night, the artist (no longer) formerly known as Andruw Jones ripped three homers to lead the local nine to another series victory over the hated Angels; their third straight series victory and 7th victory in 8 games. The Rangers now hold a slim one-game lead over the formerly Anaheim Angels heading into a four game series in Seattle.

The Mariners had a very nice June – going 15-10 to climb back into the race, but there’s something about them that doesn’t scare me too much. Not that they are a bad team, but I don’t really fear their lineup (fewest runs scored in the AL) and their bullpen is questionable at best. The Rangers do have to face the top of the Mariners rotation, with Felix Hernandez slated for tonight and Erik Bedard going Sunday, but the Rangers are countering with Tommy Hunter, Scott Feldman and Kevin Millwood on Thursday, Friday and Saturday respectively.

Currently the Rangers sit 1 game ahead of second place Anaheim (3 games against the red-hot Yankees this weekend) and 4.5 ahead of Seattle. The Rangers are already 5-0 against the Mariners this year, including that crushing three game sweep in May, complete with two straight last at-bat victories against Brandon Morrow (starting Friday). Apart from that stretch in May, the Rangers might be playing their best ball of the year, having won 7 of 8 against the Angels and Rays, two teams who just about everybody would agree are better than Seattle.

The Mariners completed a grueling three city trip to Los Angeles, New York and Boston with an impressive 5-4 record, but just followed it up with two straight losses at home to the Orioles, the AL’s worst road team. Yesterday was particularly infuriating for M’s fans, as closer David Aardsma gave up five runs in the ninth, blowing a 3-0 lead in the process.

Anything worse than a split of this series for the Rangers would be a massive disappointment, but if the Rangers took 3 of 4, they would push the Mariners to 6.5 games behind them and remain in first no matter what happens with the Angels. Not to mention the psychological effect it would have on the Mariners with the Rangers holding an 8-1 advantage over them in the season series.

Quite frankly, I’m kind of expecting the Rangers to win three games in this series. It’s a radical departure from past years, but watching this team over the past week and a half, it just seems that if they get a quality start (at least 6 IP and 3 runs allowed or less) or close to it, they are going to win. And the Mariners, as good a season as they’ve had, just don’t strike me as a team that are going to bludgeon Rangers pitching.

Lots of good vibes in the Metroplex right now – let’s hope it carries over to Jerry’s team.

Top Ten Dallas Sports Moments (Part II)

July 7, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Yesterday we looked at moments #6-10 in the history of Dallas sports – today, we complete the list.

5. Moody Madness – April 26, 1984

It could be argued this game should be even higher on this list. Within their fourth season, the Mavericks had already made the playoffs through shrewd trades and good drafting. This team had a strong foundation built with players such as Rolando Blackman and Mark Aguirre along with Jay Vincent and Brad Davis.

This game in particular was the deciding fifth game of the first round series, held at SMU’s Moody Coliseum because of a tennis tournament being held at Reunion Arena. The Mavs had earned the fourth seed with a 43-39 record, giving them home-court advantage over the Seattle SuperSonics.

9,007 were packed into Moody Coliseum to see if the Mavs could get to the second round against the powerful LA Lakers. Seattle was up seven at the two minute mark and up six with 48 seconds to go, but the Mavs forced turnovers down the stretch and forced overtime.

While the Mavs jumped out to a lead in the extra frame, Seattle made a late push, but the Mavs held on for a thrilling 105-104 victory and moved on to the second round. While the team promptly fell to the Lakers, the Mavs announced their presence in the Dallas sports scene with this, one of their most memorable wins.

4. Cowboys trade Herschel Walker – October 12, 1989

The Trade, as it’s called, has been talked about more than enough in these parts, so I’ll just give a few quick facts:

  • Largest trade in NFL history: involved 18 players and draft picks.
  • The Cowboys received eight picks and five players while giving up Walker and four draft picks
  • Emmitt Smith, Darren Woodson and Russell Maryland all became Cowboys because of this trade.

This trade was made during a 1-15 season in 1989, the worst 16-game record in franchise history. (Dallas went 0-11-1 in 1960, its expansion year.) At the time, the trade was highly frowned upon, but shrewd drafting by the Cowboys’ staff propelled them to three Super Bowl titles in four years and into another stratosphere in terms of franchise value.

3. Dirk over Manu – May 22, 2006

Sometimes it’s hard to see which moments are the most important in a season until long after they happen. Sometimes you know exactly when something big happens. This was one of those times. The Mavs had a 3-1 lead on the defending champion Spurs, but had let it slip away to a Game 7 in San Antonio. The Mavs came out firing in the first half, building up a 14-point lead at halftime, only to see it slip away on a Manu Ginobili 3-pointer with 33 seconds left.

But on the next possession, Dirk put the Mavs on his back and drove to the hole – drawing a foul on Manu Ginobili in the process – which ended up forcing overtime. The Mavs held down Tim Duncan in OT and headed on to the Western Conference Finals. Everyone remembers how close the Mavs were to the Larry O’Brien trophy, but this play by Dirk should never be overlooked.

2. Game Six – June 19, 1999

We’re moving into rarefied air here. Anyone who doesn’t remember the magical run of the 1999 Dallas Stars needs a serious history lesson. Current GM Joe Nieuwendyk helped lead a loaded Dallas squad – winners of the President’s Trophy for best record in the regular season – into the franchise’s first Stanley Cup Finals appearance in the Lone Star State.

Their opponents? A Cinderella Buffalo Sabres team, who came into the NHL Playoffs seeded seventh in the Eastern Conference. Buffalo struck first with a Game 1 win, but the Stars found themselves up three games to two in Game 6 in Buffalo. The game became a 1-1 duel between netminders Eddie “The Eagle” Belfour, and Dominik “The Dominator” Hasek. The contest remained tied at 1 through two overtime periods before Brett Hull finally got one past Hasek. While his skate was in the crease, Hull’s goal was not waived off, and the Stars celebrated their first – and only – Stanley Cup championship.

1. XXVII – January 31, 1993

After two straight Super Bowl losses, it seemed as if the Buffalo Bills were due to finally win one after making it back to the Big Game for the third straight year. The Dallas Cowboys were just three years removed from being the worst team in the league – they couldn’t possibly rise that quickly to the top, could they?

Absolutely. While the Cowboys have won four other Super Bowls, I don’t believe that there was quite a moment like this one where a Dallas team was truly on top of the world. This game sparked a dynasty, and is one of the greatest teams in NFL history, by any standards. Although we’ll stick with the biased Dallas opinion. If only Leon Lett would have made it over the goal line with that ball, that scoring record would belong to the Cowboys…

So there you have it. The top 10 Dallas sports moments. Hopefully there will be a couple more recent ones that will crack the list soon; a championship can’t come soon enough.

Top Ten Dallas Sports Moments (Part 1)

July 6, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The last ten years have been Sahara Desert-barren for us Dallas fans searching for a championship. We haven’t seen anything close to the dry spell of such cities as Cleveland, Seattle or Buffalo, but ever since the Stars hoisted the Cup in 1999, we’ve seen our share of gut-punch level defeats.

So let’s try and focus on some positives on a relatively mild summer day. Namely, what have the 10 best moments been in the sports history of our fair city?

The Dallas Mavericks 2009 Draft “haul”

June 26, 2009 by · 2 Comments

As somebody who watched a lot of Big Ten basketball this year, consider me thankful that the Mavs did not end up keeping B.J. Mullens. While I don’t know him personally, the amount of time I spent watching him left me the opposite of impressed. To put it nicely.

Busy Offseasons For Texas NBA Teams

June 25, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The NBA season has been finished for about and you would think people would be more interested in Wimbledon odds, since tennis’ preeminent Grand Slam is underway or Super Bowl odds, since the season is rapidly approaching, but all of the water cooler chatter has been regarding the NBA offseason.

The Texas teams are right in the thick of things, including the San Antonio Spurs, who pulled off a blockbuster trade on Tuesday.

The San Antonio Spurs shipped off some spare parts in the form of Fabricio Oberto, Kurt Thomas and Bruce Bowen to the Milwaukee Bucks to get Richard Jefferson.

Jefferson fills a huge void for the Spurs in so many ways, which should make them a real threat once again in the Western Conference. I’m betting management was thrilled with the deal considering they didn’t have to trade away any of their core.

For starters, the Spurs do get a starter in return for three bench players. Jefferson will add a legit 20-point scorer to go with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, who is off a career year.

While the Spurs first moves have made their Southwest Division cohorts kind of nervous, the other teams don’t figure to stand pat.

The Dallas Mavericks have been linked to Cleveland Cavaliers power forward Anderson Varejao, are in the thick of a lot of rumors. Reports indicate that they tried to ship out Josh Howard for the fifth pick overall but the Washington Wizards were not interested. The Mavs have also been linked to Shaquille O’Neal, although he isn’t exactly a team priority. A player the Mavericks are more likely to move is Jerry Stackhouse.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks have already made before the start of the draft, shipping off the 22nd pick in the draft to Portland. The Trail Blazers traded three picks to move up two spots and now own the Mavs 22nd pick. Meanwhile, the Mavs moved back two spots to No. 24 and received Portland No. 56 pick and another second-rounder in 2010.

Apparently the Trail Blazers are interesting in international player Omri Casspi and were worried that the Sacramento Kings might take him with the 23rd pick in the draft.

As sports wagering experts know, the draft is a hectic time when teams reshape themselves. Keep an eye on Thursday to see what else the three Texas teams pull off.

Mavs trade draft pick

June 24, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

According to ESPN’s Chad Ford, the Mavericks have traded the 22nd pick in tomorrow’s NBA draft to the Portland Trail Blazers for the 24th and 56th picks this year along with Portland’s worst second round pick in 2010.

The Mavericks were rumored to be looking to trade up to the 5th pick, but they were outdone by the Minnesota Timberwolves, who traded for that pick today.

With Jason Kidd not getting any younger, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Mavericks go after a point guard in the draft, but drafting a big man wouldn’t necessarily be out of the question.

As of right now, these two picks the Mavs just traded for are the only two picks they have in tomorrow night’s draft.

Dallas Mavericks 2009 Playoff | Round 2 Nuggets

May 1, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks will face the Denver Nuggets in round 2 of the 2009 NBA playoffs. The Nuggets won all 4 of the teams regular season matchups, and since Chauncey Billups arrival the Nuggets have a new identity. Both teams are firing on all cylinders and this should shape up to be a great series. The TV schedule is listed below and this post will be updated with scores and recaps following the games.

Dallas Mavericks 2009 Playoff Schedule | Round 2

Game 1
Sunday May 3rd, 2009 | at Denver | Denver 109 Dallas 95

The Dallas Mavericks looked strong early but they were unable to outlast the Denver Nuggets in game 1 of their round 2 series. The Mavericks led by 8 after the first quarter, but they were outplayed in each of the remaining 3 quarters. Erick Dampier was unable to contain Nene who scored 24. In order to win game 2 the Mavericks need less turnovers, they had 20 in game 1. Also Erick Dampier will need to give the Mavs more against Nene if they are going to have a chance in this series.

Game 2
Tuesday May 5th, 2009 | at Denver | Denver 117 Dallas 105 | Get NBA Playoff Tickets
Game 2 was a repeat of game 1 only this time the Mavericks lost Josh Howard to injury after 5 minutes. Josh Howard has been battling ankle problems for most of the season, he injured his good ankle in game 1 of this series. Game 2 was a surprisingly close game until the 4th quarter when it was apparent the Mavs were out of gas. Erick Dampier’s poor defense once again allowed Nene to score 25 points, Dampier was in foul trouble for most of the game. For Game 3 this playoff series heads to Dallas, and hopefully some home cooking will help the Mavericks elevate their level of play against this athletic Denver Nuggets squad.

Game 3
Saturday May 9th, 2009 | at Dallas | Denver 106 Dallas 105 | Get NBA Playoff Tickets
The Mavs missed key free throws in the final moments of game 3 allowing the Nuggets to tighten up the score. The Dallas Mavericks were up by 2 with about 31 seconds left when Antoine Wright attempted to foul Carmelo Anthony twice, but apparently the ref standing right next to Anthony and Wright did not see either of Wright’s foul attempts. Anthony continued playing through the fouls and knocked down a 3 pointer to put Denver ahead. Shortly after the game the NBA released a statement stating the officials blew the call. The Mavericks head into game 4 facing elimination as they fight the fact that no NBA team has ever comeback from being down 3 games to win a playoff series.

Game 4
Monday May 11th, 2009 | at Dallas | Dallas 119 Denver 117 | Get NBA Playoff Tickets
The Mavericks season appeared to be over in the first half, but they were able to mount a comeback and hold the lead in the closing moments of game 4. Dirk Nowitzki had a MVP performance scoring 44 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the Mavericks victory. Erick Dampier was no help once again, he had had 0 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 5 turnovers, and 6 fouls. Dampier played the fewest minutes at just under 23 but managed to have the most turnovers. Nuggets Forward Carmelo Anthony had 41 points and 11 boards in the game. The series heads back to Denver for game 5, the Mavs need a repeat performance to have any chance for a win in the Pepsi Center.

Game 5
Wednesday May 13th, 2009 | at Denver | Denver 124 Dallas 110 | Get NBA Playoff Tickets
The Denver Nuggets won game 5 winning the series 4 games to 1, the Mavs were unable to match Denver’s physical and athletic play. Erick Dampier’s inability to cover an athletic center has once again left the Mavericks out of the playoffs. This off season the Mavs will need to either resign Jason Kidd or find a new point guard for next season. The Dallas Mavericks are also in need of a center that unlike Erick Dampier has some hands and will do more than foul out and turn the ball over, a post presence would be nice. Rasheed Wallace, Detroit’s PF/C has expressed the fact that he would like to come to Dallas and would be a perfect fit.

Dallas Mavericks vs. San Antonio Spurs Playoffs 2009

The first Dallas Mavericks playoff home game is April 23rd at the American Airlines Center at 7:30pm, and some game tickets are still available. If the series continues the way it went in game 1, the Mavericks are on course to sweep the series. If you have not seen the Mavericks play this season, now is your chance to cheer them on in the playoffs, so get you tickets now before they are all gone.

Game 1
April 18th, 2009 | at San Antonio | Dallas 105 San Antonio 97

Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, and Jason Terry were held to only 35 points combined in the Mavericks 2009 playoff debut. The Mavericks road win came thanks to the play of an injured Josh Howard, J.J. Barea, Josh Howard and the rest of the Dallas Mavericks bench.

San Antonio looked apathetic, Manu Ginobili is out for the season and Tim Duncan has ailing knees. This has forced Tony Parker to carry the load for the Spurs this season.

Game 2
April 20th, 2009 | at San Antonio | Dallas 84 San Antonio 105

The Dallas Mavericks were unable to stop Tony Parker in game 2. J.J. Barea was unable to repeat his defensive performance in game 1 allowing Tony Parker to score 38 points. Parker also had 4 rebounds, and 8 assists in the Spurs blowout of the Mavericks.

The Mavericks head home to Dallas for game 3. Game 1 was the Mavericks first playoff road game in 3 years. The first two games took place in San Antonio and the series is now tied 1-1.

Game 3
April 23rd, 2009 | at Dallas Mavericks | Dallas 88 San Antonio 67

The Dallas Mavericks put the game out of the San Antonio Spurs reach in the first quarter of game three. Unable to mount a comeback, the Spurs starters were warming the bench shortly after halftime. Tim Duncan and Tony Parker did not return to action, the Spurs simply gave up. Parker and Duncan will be rested for game 4 which will be played at the American Airlines Center on Saturday.

Game 4
April 25th, 2009 | at Dallas Mavericks | Dallas 99 San Antonio 90

Mavericks won game 4 despite allowing Tony Parker to score 43 points. Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry were held to 22 points combined, but Josh Howard picked up the slack scoring 28 points on a bum ankle. The Mavericks will return to San Antonio with a chance to close out the series.

Game 5
April 28th, 2009 | at San Antonio | Dallas 106 San Antonio 93

The Mavericks closed out the series in San Antonio, Dirk and Jason Terry resurfaced on the stat sheet as the Mavs leading scorers. Tim Duncan and Tony Parker had nice games but the lack of Manu Ginobli turned out to be to much to recover from. Dallas will face the Denver Nuggets in the second round of the 2009 NBA Playoffs.

2009 Dallas Mavericks TV Schedule

2009 Dallas Mavericks TV Schedule | Mavs Basketball ScheduleThere was a lot of intrigue heading into the 2008-2009 NBA season here in Dallas. After a subpar 2007-2008 season, Mark Cuban fired Avery Johnson and replaced him with Rick Carlisle. The early returns this season were not great, but the Mavericks have since rebounded and, as of this posting, sit at 20-12 and in 5th place in Western Conference.

Now that the football season is down to its final month, basketball will begin to move closer to center stage. We all know that the NBA Playoffs is basically another season all on its own, but you still have to get there. And while the Mavericks are playing well recently, they still currently only sit three games ahead of the #9 team in the Western Conference.

So clearly, there will be plenty of important games to watch in the final 50 of the regular season. And just where do you go to find out the Dallas Mavericks 2009 TV schedule? Well, we’re giving the Mavs TV Schedule to you right here — so you don’t have to go anywhere.

The following TV schedule is courtesy of the Dallas Mavericks official website and the TV listings for the nationally televised games are always subject to change, or other games could be added later in the season. All times are Central.
