The Texas Rangers are in the thick of the wild card playoff race for the first time since the 90s. The Rangers success is surprisingly due to their great pitching and defense, Ron Washington has even said that if you can’t play defense you will not be playing for the Texas Rangers. This is comforting to hear considering all the teams the Rangers have fielded in the past that were built to hit home runs and because of this struck out a lot. As I am writing this the Texas Rangers trail the Boston Red Sox by 2 games for the Wild Card Playoff spot. Below you will find the updated AL Wild Card Standings for the 2009 playoffs.

Will the Rangers fade?

andruw-jonesThat’s the question on everyone’s mind. After completing the “first half” of the season at 48-39, the Rangers have surprised just about everyone (including myself). So of course the next question is, will they follow it up? Right now, the Rangers are in the thick of the race, 2 games behind the Angels (after the Halos won last night), but the media has been relatively split on whether the Rangers have a real shot at this thing.

Dan Plesac, Mitch Williams, and John Hart all picked the Rangers to win the AL West on MLB Network’s Midseason Report Cards earlier this week, but it should be mentioned that Mitch Williams and John Hart do kind of have Rangers ties. So that should probably be taken with a grain of salt. Still, looking around the internet reveals that the Rangers aren’t really being written off yet, which is encouraging.

ESPN’s Buster Olney, however, brought up an interesting point about the Rangers and why it might be tough for them to make a run: the schedule.

Yesterday, Buster Olney ranked the roads to the playoffs for nine AL “contenders.” The Rangers were 9th, with what Olney argued as the toughest road. Minnesota, the Rangers’ opponent this weekend, had the easiest remaining schedule.

Why the AL West is better than people think

Last year was not a good one for the AL West. While the Angels had a remarkable regular season, they were quickly eliminated from the playoffs by Boston for the second straight year and third time in four playoff appearances since 2004. There seems to be some sort of mental block the Halos have against playing Boston, although they are 4-2 against them this year. Read more
