Two areas of issue for the Cowboys last year were the offensive line and defensive secondary. Prior to the final week of the preseason, the Cowboys released veteran center Andre Gurode and replaced him with second-year backup Phil Costa. The Cowboys have transformed their offensive line from a larger veteran unit to a smaller and younger group. Two of the starting offensive linemen for the Cowboys are rookies with two veterans and the second-year Costa at center. The Cowboys’ defense is not showing any real signs of improvement under new coordinator Rob Ryan’s new system. The secondary still looks out of position and has a tendency to get beat on long plays. With veteran wide receiver Roy Williams being released during the off-season, Bryant now finds himself as the number two receiver on the roster and he is taking his position seriously. That leaves the Rangers with a one-game lead over the Angels in the West ahead of that matinee with the Tigers, and Texas will head back home in time for the beginning of their weekend set against Cleveland, who are trying to keep pace with Detroit in the Central, so you know they’ll bring their A-game. Following that series, the Rangers will welcome Seattle to the Ballpark and will likely be the MLB betting favorites, but Texas has to get their act together and do the little things that they seem to have trouble with on the road.

Dallas Cowboys

The lockout ended last week and the Cowboys wasted no time; the major releases were Roy Williams, Marion Barber, Marc Colombo and Kris Brown, while rookies Tyron Smith, DeMarco Murray and Bruce Carter were signed. Linemen Doug Free and Kyle Kosier were re-signed, and along with Smith, they’ll be counted on to keep quarterback Tony Romo on his feet. The Cowboys did manage to keep some key players and prevent them from getting into the open market. Offensive tackle Doug Free was going to be a hot free agent until the Cowboys signed him to a four-year deal. Defensive end Marcus Spears was retained by Dallas, along with offensive guard Kyle Kosier.

New defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has his hands full trying to put together a defense that can compete for Dallas. Considering the moves that Dallas made in free agency, Ryan’s job just got more difficult.

Texas Rangers

The Rangers ended the week poorly after winning two of three at home against Toronto last weekend, but all is not lost; they can still earn a split of their four-game set at the Ballpark against Minnesota with a win on Thursday night against the Twins. Whatever attention the CFL was getting will now be taken over by the NFL as the lockout ended on Monday, and the Cowboys have been hot on the heels of free-agent cornerback Nmandi Asomugha, who would really provide a spark in a secondary that was often burned last season. A number of players have been or are on their way to being released, such as running back Marion Barber, receiver Roy Williams, tackle Marc Colombo and kicker Kris Brown, among others. One signing that the Cowboys did make was tackle Doug Free, who received a four-year deal worth $32 million, and Dallas knows that they have keep quarterback Tony Romo on the field after last season’s broken clavicle. Guard Kyle Kosier was also re-signed to a three-year deal worth $9 million, and they will be joined up front by rookie tackle Tyron Smith and center Andre Gurode, but they have to find a replacement for guard Leonard Davis, who is on his way out of Dallas. Now, look for the Cowboys to focus their efforts on Asomugha, the jewel of the free-agent market and one of the top three cornerbacks in the game. If the Cowboys can lure him to “Jerry’s World”, look for their sports betting odds to make a move.

The cloud of bad behavior that has been hanging over Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant seems to have returned. Despite his insistence that all of his past debts have been paid, Bryant and his advisor David Wells are being sued by jeweler Eleow Hunt for almost $600,000 in jewelry, cash advances and tickets to sporting events. Dallas has held camp in San Antonio in the past, and the festival-like atmosphere is something that the players and coaches seem to enjoy. Camp opens in San Antonio this Thursday, and the Cowboys will stay in the Alamodome until August 10^th.

Sanders is more known for his flash and dancing than his play. But anyone that has played with, or against, Deion Sanders knows that there were few cornerbacks better at cutting off his side of the field that Sanders. Sanders finished his 14-year NFL career with 53 interceptions, nine defensive touchdowns and nine kicks returned for a touchdown. He was a six-time first team all-pro and was the 1994 defensive player of the year.

While all of the positive activity has been swirling around Sanders lately, the hall of fame cornerback took some time to reflect on Cowboys’ second-year receiver Dez Bryant. When Bryant entered the league, Sanders was asked to mentor the young receiver. Bryant first caused a stir when he refused to carry veteran receiver Roy Williams’ pads in training camp which is a common rookie tradition. The owners want to limit rookie contracts, and the players are trying to maintain a higher threshold for pay and contract duration. But, both sides say that this issue is not enough to prolong the lockout by more than seven to 10 days. This week is a critical week as Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones and the rest of the NFL owners meet to try and get on the same page and bring the lockout to an end.

Dallas quarterback Tony Romo was one of the first players in the NFL to organize workouts for his team, and 45 players showed up including some of the NFL picks from this year’s draft. But, apparently, the workouts only exist so long as Romo is there. The workouts slowed down when Tony Romo went to get married, and now the workouts will stop completely as Romo heads off to his honeymoon. Tony Romo threw another monkey wrench into the team’s workout plans when he became the second seed in the Wisconsin State Golf Association’s Match Play tournament. Romo is a regular participant in this tournament, but his appearance pushes team workouts back even further. Other Cowboys players have said that they expect the team to get back together for workouts in July.

The Dallas Cowboys have always been known as a sort of haven for big name wide receivers at various points in their careers. So when news came that commissioner Roger Goodell will be re-instating Plaxico Burress, who was recently released from prison for shooting himself in the leg two years ago, the rumors started to circulate that the Cowboys may have an interest in the former Super Bowl champion receiver.

After spending the last two or three years re-organizing his wide receiver corps, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has not expressed any interest in bringing Burress to Dallas. Many Cowboys fans remember the image of linebacker Godfrey Myles seriously injuring himself in a touchdown celebration in Super Bowl XXVII. Myles went on to work in the athletic department at the University of Florida. Last week, Myles suffered a stroke and passed away. He played in 76 games for the Cowboys during the 1990’s glory years, including 11 starts in 1995. The University of Florida made the announcement via Twitter late last week.

The Cowboys received a little help from the league when Dallas was awarded a seventh round draft pick in the compensatory lottery that was held last week. These are picks awarded to teams whose free agent losses were greater than their free agent gains. The Cowboys received one pick out of the 21 handed out.

When the Green Bay game ended, Jerry Jones was quoted as saying that some people in his organization would face “serious consequences” for the Cowboys’ 1-7 start. So far the only person to experience those consequences is Wade Phillips. For the first time in their history, the Dallas Cowboys fired a head coach during the season. Assistant head coach Jason Garrett takes over as only the seventh head coach in Dallas Cowboys history. Garrett was also the offensive coordinator and he will retain that job as he moves into the head coaching job.

The interest now is to see what Jerry Jones will do with the head coaching job when the season is over. Jason Garrett was lured into staying in Dallas with a $3.5 million per year contract when at least two other teams wanted him as their head coach. Garrett turned down those NFL head coaching jobs to stay in Dallas and take over when Phillips was gone, but now that Phillips is gone it is not a slam dunk that Garrett will take over next season as the full-time head coach.

Garrett is seen by many as part of the problem in Dallas. He does not command a lot of respect in the locker room, and his offensive schemes and decisions have not brought the Cowboys a lot of good fortune this season. There is a growing feeling in Dallas that Garrett may not get the Cowboys head coaching job and that he will have to head to another NFL city to take over as the head man.

One of the leading early candidates who is getting a lot of mentions as the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is former Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach John Gruden. Gruden is currently an analyst with ESPN Monday Night Football, and his no-nonsense approach and stern demeanor may be just what the Cowboys locker room needs.

During the Green Bay game, Dallas wide receiver Roy Williams was delivered a shot to the back of his head by the helmet of Packers linebacker Nick Collins. The NFL announced Monday that the hit was illegal and fined Collins $50,000. Collins was also given a warning that future hits of that nature will result in more fines and possibly a suspension. Roy Williams did not suffer a concussion and will be ready to play against the upcoming week 11 game against Giants.
