The summer of 2010 will officially be in the rear view mirror with the kick off of the football season this weekend. And what a summer it was for the Big 12. The conference was on life support, and then flat-lined, then was brought back to life, albeit minus a couple limbs. But that is for another time; there’s a football season to play.
The Big 12 is starting the 2010 campaign with three teams ranked in the top 10 of the preseason polls. And there are several others that hope to crash the party and make the final season of the Big 12 as we know it a special one.
Ah, yes, optimism reigns supreme in early September for nearly everyone. Despite the positive vibes coming from around the conference, this weekend will bring with it the reality that not everything is perfect. Here is a look at the Big 12 South and the questions each team needs to answer if they hope to turn that optimism into something real.

Texas A&M Aggies vs Utah State Aggies
March 16, 2010 by Matt Lawrence · Leave a Comment
The 5th seed Texas A&M Aggies will face the 12th seed Utah State Aggies in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament. March Madness 2010 kicks off on Thursday, but this game will not be played until Friday March 19th.
Texas A&M Aggies appear to be the stronger team on paper with an RPI Rank of 13, and an AP rank of 23rd in the nation. The Texas A&M Aggies have history on their side too. In 2009 the Aggies were ousted in the second round, and the Texas A&M Coach Mark Turgeon is 4-3 in the NCAA Tournament.
The Utah State Aggies have more March Madness appearances then Texas A&M, however they have less tournament wins. The Utah State Aggies RPI rank is also a 30 and they do not have an AP rank. The Utah State Aggies coach, Stew Morrill is 1-7 in the NCAA tournament.
However you can throw out all of the information above on Friday when both of these teams will battle to keep their March Madness hopes alive. In my bracket I chose the Texas A&M Aggies to move on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

(3) Texas Longhorns at Texas A&M Aggies – Thanksgiving Day
November 23, 2009 by Matt Lawrence · 2 Comments
The #3 Texas Longhorns control their own destiny this year, if the team can win the remaining games on their schedule and the Big 12 Championship they will play for the national title. #1 Florida and #2 Alabama will play each other in the SEC Championship, whichever team loses will no doubt fall below the Longhorns.
The first hurdle standing in the path of the Texas Longhorns national title hopes is Thanksgiving against the Texas A&M Aggies, who have 6 wins and 5 losses this year. This rivalry, now named the State Farm Lone Star Showdown, will be played in College Station this year. Texas is the better team, but traveling to your rivals home field can always make things more interesting, my prediction is that the game will stay close in the first half, before the Longhorns build up their lead and win 34 to 17.
