What was that Emmitt Smith? 7 and 9?

January 4, 2010 by

The Cowboys gave more reasons why Emmitt Smith is not in the broadcast seat anymore. First let me start off by stating that Emmitt Smith is hands down the best Cowboys running back of all time. I will follow that up by saying that he really needs to keep his mouth shut. Not only has he been laughed out of every broadcasting job that he has held, but at the beginning of this season he called out his former team the Dallas Cowboys. In case you need a refresher or just a good laugh here are some of my favorite quotes from the former Dallas Cowboys running back:

1. “The stripes of a leopard”
Back in Week 3 of the 2007 season, Emmitt was asked about the ability of Randy Moss to be a leader in New England. Emmitt’s response? “You cannot change the stripes of a leopard.” Indeed Emmitt, indeed.

2. “Sharp as a whistle”
When discussing the Pats again, Emmitt didn’t mix his metaphors: “Go to Arizona, sharp as a whistle, and do some finishing touches, so we can go down in the Super Bowl and play our best football of the whole entire season.”

3. “Blowed out”
Classic Emmitt. This one was another repeat offender. When discussing going up against the Pats, Emmitt explained, “This kind of inconsistency play, going up against a team like New England, will get you completely blowed out”

After people started to notice Smith’s broadcasting gems, Emmitt did his best to try and improve his delivery: “Don’t worry about the game you just won or the team that we just blew out… or, um… blown… blowed out… Let’s think about what we need to do going forward, and they had, uh… blown out.”

His latest quote predicted the Cowboys going 7 and 9 and not making the playoffs. You can read all about the Emmitt Smith Prediction to get caught up if you missed it the first time.

Here is a quick summary:
“Realistically, I think that the Cowboys can win seven games,”

“I mean, when I start hearing things are going to change, I keep asking myself as a player, how much are they going to change? Are you going to be a hard-nosed coach now since things are going to change? Are you going to be more focused than you were last year? Those kind of things, I’m like, c’mon. This is not a game where you can just turn it on and turn it off.”

Let me give some props to Patrick Crayton for calling out Emmitt Smith, he commented on how someone had such a negative prediction shouldn’t be wearing the NFC East Champions hat. That said I think we are all glad that Emmitt Smith was wrong and the Cowboys season ended how it did. I will leave you with one final quote from Jerry Jones.

“I think that Emmitt has probably recognized that he was a little off several games back,” Jones said. “So I’m having fun with him. I’m glad he was wrong.”
